Port Huron, Michigan
The Port Huron Tennis House is an indoor tennis and pickleball facility offering comprehensive and competitive programming for players of all ages. The Tennis House has six courts in the front portion of the facility, with a hallway through the back that brings you to an additional two courts, courtside seating, and a room with a variety of exercise equipment. This hallway is where the mural was installed. Two walls stretch the length of the hallway, measuring 48 feet wide by seven feet tall each. This mural was a combined 672 square feet.
Mural Description: On wall one, you have a female tennis player located along the left side with geometric shapes signifying the strings in her racket. To her left, a circle shows the downward motion of a ball, while to her right you have overlapping rectangles representing the score cards often found on tennis courts. Passing through that are lines signifying the bouncing motion of a tennis ball, with a tennis net located beneath that. To the right of the tennis ball, a male tennis player aims to strike and overhead shot with geometric shapes representing his racket strings as well. Lastly, we have a swooping motion moving through the classic lines of a tennis court.
On wall two, you will see similar imagery as found in wall one, with more abstraction. At the far left, we have the same downward ball motion with the bouncing path directly next to that. The swooping motion and lines of the tennis court are still represented on the right half of this wall as well. The main focus of this design is the quote, “GRIND NOW SHINE LATER” which speaks to the intense amount of practice and training time required in the sport of tennis before competitive play time. The goal was to inspire the players to keep working and pushing through the long hours so they may then “shine” when game time comes.
